Kyle McMillan, CH.

Hello, and welcome to Point of Practice. I’m a NGH-Certified Hypnotherapist trained in a number of modalities.

My primary interest is assisting people who are truly ready for change. Whether it be smoking-cessation, weight-loss & diet, insomnia or a desire to excel in areas you’re blocked in, I use the tools at my disposal to help you do so.

SELF-CONTROL

Whether it’s cigarettes or sweets, all of us know what it’s like to over-indulge. When said indulgence becomes an entrenched and escalating habit, however, it’s safe to say control has switched hands. If you feel like your window of opportunity to do something is passing, it’s not. We just have to exercise some patience, and dig a little bit.

SLEEP IMPROVEMENT

If sleep tops the list of essential wellbeing practices, rivalled only by diet and exercise, why are so many of us still in need of drastic improvement in sleep-hygiene? Because of our relentless performance/results-oriented economy. The irony here is both of these things will drastically improve once quality of sleep does! Come in and learn to get truly deep rest again.

APPREHENSIONS & FEARS

Everyone has them, of course, and usually for good reason! Nature knows what it’s doing. However, when minor fears and apprehensions prove disruptive to our daily lives, or begin affecting our relationships, it may be time to regulate them. If you’ve found yourself experiencing such a hindrance, don’t just accept it, see what hypnosis can do for you.

SKILL & ASSET ENHANCEMENT

Feeling as though you’ve hit a block, or plateaued and can’t seem to get past it? While not always the case, what is quite often at the bottom of this (literally) is a simple but powerful safety-measure employed by the unconscious mind against something you’re barely aware of. If this is indeed the issue, we’ll find out, and take it from there.

While Hollywood and Stage Hypnotists have understandably had the most effect on the public’s view of the craft, one of the unfortunate side effects has been a skewed perception of the practice as a whole. The holistic side of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy — which is where it will always have its roots — has come to be largely misunderstood. Here are some of the most ubiquitous myths still cropping up in the zeitgeist today.

“I won’t be in control.”

Simply untrue. The NGH literature itself states: “Most authorities agree that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.” In other words, the ability to be hypnotized is a subjective experience that the hypnotist merely facilitates and guides. If something doesn’t feel right you will simply not comply (or you’d do whatever you’d do in the waking state.) Even if this wasn’t the case, Hypnotherapists are bound by a strict code of ethics that require stringent adherence at all times.

“I won’t remember what happened.”

Reaching amnesic levels in Hypnotherapy is a rare and specialized treatment, performed with a client who has experienced the trance state many times, and clearly knows this will be taking place. I do not currently practice these techniques; you remain fully aware (in actuality, more aware) the entire time, with the ability to end the session any time you choose.

“Hypnosis is witchcraft.”

Marshall McLuhan once stated: “Mysticism is just tomorrow’s science dreamed today.” Hypnosis, one of the most ancient medicines, is a science. The unfortunate but persistent association with the occult neglects its use as a viable, pro-health option, while at the same time leaving us willingly — albeit unknowingly — swimming in it daily. The incredible reality is that ‘hypnosis’ is almost a type of de-hypnosis from so many of the limiting ‘drivers’ we erroneously allowed to be installed in our minds.

Question Mark Icon | Myths | Hypnotherapy for Growth & Goal Achievement | Point of Practice | Kyle McMillan, CH.

“It’s all made up.”

Maybe it is! But if it works, does it really matter? Hypnotism has long been controversial due to its mercurial nature–but this is also part of its ongoing fascination. As the latter continues to grow, along with the science regarding it, I believe this myth will fade completely. If you’d like to crush that doubt immediately, however, simply read about its applications as an analgesic in dentistry and surgery.

No Magic Pill

Permanently releasing bad habits, and adopting conscious, healthier ones is tough (we all know how most New Year’s resolutions end up), and Hypnotherapy is not exempt from this — it is no magic pill.

Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and nothing will change the fact that the things we desire most require focus, determination and conscious consistency in order to manifest.

Many people consciously believe they’re ready for rapid change, only to find out they’re far more comfortable remaining within the limitations they’ve put on themselves. In this case, a much more drawn-out approach is likely the solution.

But if you’ve truly made up both your minds (conscious and unconscious) you will likely be thrilled with the results.

Important Note

Hypnotherapists are not healthcare professionals. We do not diagnose or prescribe. If you believe you may have a medical condition of any sort, it is imperative to consult with your doctor first. If we suspect you may have a health issue you haven’t seen your doctor for, we will suggest you do so and/or refer you out to a specialist.

How Can I Help?

Permanently releasing bad habits, and adopting conscious, healthier ones is tough (we all know how most New Year’s resolutions end up), and Hypnotherapy is not exempt from this — it is no magic pill.

Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and nothing will change the fact that the things we desire most require focus, determination and conscious consistency in order to manifest.

Indeed, this is the only difference between those living a life true to themselves, and those who aren’t — and while the former is a rarity in today’s society, it need not be. All that is required is a little de- and re- conditioning.

As we do so, the blocks to the actions needed  to make such lifestyle changes start to dissolve, and the new, consciously created pathways can finally begin establishing themselves in physical reality.

Work With Me

Even as far back as 1970, hypnotherapy was demonstrating a staggering success rate compared to traditional approaches.

Stubborn issues always have deep roots, thus requiring someone able (and willIng) to move into the chthonic realms to investigate, and — if said territory indeed proves to be the area of the block — deal with them directly. Once we get them there, the possibility of swift and lasting change becomes far more plausible.

FAQ's

How Long is Each Session?

Each session is around 60mins, unless otherwise agreed upon.

What Can I Expect In Each Session?

The first session always consists of an introduction and an intake assessment, in order to get to know you, and create a deeper understanding of what you’d like to achieve.

I then take you through a few simple and fun exercises to help me determine your powers of concentration and imagination, what subject ‘type’ you are, and what the best ways to integrate your goals into your subconscious may be. We then normally have a short session, taking you into a light level of trance and testing the waters, so to speak.

After this, having met you, integrated your intentions and performed a brief session, we begin stabilization work. (See FAQ ‘How Many Sessions Are Required?’)

Moving forward, I will outline for you where we’re at, and what you can likely expect in the next session. It truly becomes an organic process from here on out. If we maintain good rapport along the way, and you are honest with me (as much as you’d like to be; even under hypnosis, you don’t and won’t tell me anything you don’t want to) then we can count on the timeline dictating itself in as clear a manner as possible.

How Many Sessions Are Required?

As with so many things in Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, this completely depends on you.

While the initial consultation and first session are often very similar in terms of structure and the techniques used, this inevitably evolves. Every person is different.

If you are indeed hypnotizable, the first phase is stabilization, in order to make sure you’re ready for the changes you’d like to see, and to find where your footing is most solid as we set the pacing.

Then comes the actual change-work, and then, maintenance, with this last phase hopefully extending to a point where you are free from having to visit me at all! (Unless there’s a different area you’d like to work on.)

Believe it or not, all of this can happen in one session alone! (Albeit after the initial consultation and usually in a session longer than an hour.) Or, the process can stretch out to six months or more.

The primary thing is that we move at a pace that will be most beneficial to you, over the long-term.

Can Sessions Be Done Over Phone or Video?

Video, yes. Phone, no. The reason for this is it is important for me to visually track certain physical cues (eyelid fluttering, swallowing, pulse rate, etc.) to gain an accurate assessment of your level of trance, what is working and what isn’t, and many other subtle cues as the session progresses.

This is why my preference will always be in-person sessions, however, given the now nearly ubiquitous use of video agents, I’ve learned to extrapolate and do just as good of a job over video as in person, though it is somewhat more taxing.
